Class 1
In today's class we:
-Grammar (rules)
-Pronunciation (focus of this class)
- Went through the basic structure of the class
- Discussed Monopthongs and Diphthongs
- Discussed the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)
- Discussed the 3 things that make up a dialect
-Grammar (rules)
-Pronunciation (focus of this class)
- Discussed RP (Received Pronunciation) and GA (General American)
- Did exercises 2.1-2.4 and went through the answers
- Arranged the groups
- Arranged the presentation schedule for class 7 (see front course page)
- Introduced 2 IPA symbols /æ/ rat and /eɪ/ pay
- Did an exercise on finding the target sounds in our names.
- Looked at sounds for /s/ and /z/
- Did the exercises 4.1-4.4 and went through the answers
- Did a video exercise based on the Ice episode of Planet Earth (the BBC nature documentary). Please see below.
- I recommend pronunroid and dictionary.com for looking at the IPA forms of words
